House of Volumes — The brick wall in the skylit void

House of Volumes

On a compact 30' × 40' plot, the house is composed as two volumes, a tall slender brick cuboid set against a shorter, wider cube. The name works both ways: it describes the massing outside and the double height spaces inside.

Those interior volumes do the daily work of the house. Stacked double height rooms pull light down through the section and keep the floors connected, so a small footprint never reads as a small house. A perforated brick screen rises through the skylit void, throwing shifting shadows across the court through the day.
